10 to 16 May 2016 - With the Howies in Arundel

A short hop down the M1 took me to Arundel, just a little inland from Southport and not far from the Gold Coast.

Time for another catch up with Gordon and Edith Howie, who we have known since the 1980's, when a whole lot of us were working for Baroid in Aberdeen and offshore in the North Sea.  Always good to visit and catch up with their boys Harvey & Rowdy (a couple of West Highland Terriers).

Edith & Gordon live near the end of a cul de sac and as in past places have developed close relationships with their neighbours, which has resulted in many group get togethers as well as street events to celebrate Burns Night, the Melbourne Cup and Christmas.  A really nice group of people who all help each other out as than can and have quite a bit of fun along the way.

Had a number of viewings of the new caravan, which is an excuse to show a few more photos on a lovely sunny day.....

Awning out, out the front of the Howies place.
A chunky view from the back - all auto satellite dish above the toilet.
The box on the drawbar provides storage for a Honda generator and room for a few jerry cans of fuel.

As always, had a great time with the Howies, but a bit of stress on the liver as rather more red wine than usual was consumed.  Fortunately not quite as much as in previous years.  We are all slowing down a little these days....

Had a nice trip up to Mount Tamborine in the Gold Coast Hinterland and lunch at a pub looking out over the coast.
Good picture taken after lunch.  Happy days.
We also had a lunch at Southport Surf Lifesaving Club, which really has Million Dollar views along the beach.

After a very heavy Sunday that included another lunch out and visits to two sets of neighbours (thank you for your hospitality Dan & Veronque), we ended up at Regan & Paul's place across the road.  More red wine....say no more.
PJ with Regan & the Howies.
Nice shot of Paul & Regan with their dogs.

I talked to Gordon & Edith about the best way to tackle the steep climb up over the Great Dividing Range with a new caravan with brakes not yet fully run in.  Their advice was to take the Northern route over Cunninghams Gap near Ipswich, the route the trucks take when heading West via Broken Hill.  However I did want to visit Byron Bay whilst on the coast and decided to do a short excursion South & back as it is less than 90 minutes from Gordon & Edith's place.
